Title: Fwd. edge 0f T/U canopy front fairing damaged. Post by Dennis_King on 16.05.2013 at 20:20:07 Whilst replacing my t/u canopy gas struts I had to open the canopy with no struts fitted. There must have been some slight wear in the forward mounting arm pivot pins which allowed very small fwd. movement of the canopy. This was sufficient to allow the bonded canopy edge (fairing?) to foul the top skin of the a/c. Slight separation has occurred to the canopy fairing directly above the pivot arms approx. 4" X 1/4 " in the two places. I am not the builder of this aircraft and without any Vans plans and instruction book. There is no additional release mechanism other than th wire locked release lever. Reading the main forum I see that 3M Semweld can be used for bonding Perhaps somone can any one suggest a composie specialist in the S.W quarter of the uk? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Many thanks. Dennis RV9A WAM 120 engine. CDZD |

Post by Mark Browning on 05.06.2013 at 12:14:01 Hi Dennis i came over to you at Sywell You were just getting into your aircraft ! we had a chat. You may find that becuase of how the canopy struts push the canaopy you may always get movement try not to open and close with out strutts fitted. With regards to repair i would use Micro balloons and epoxy resin ( west systems ) Remove the seperated part and repair with filler. Its easy to sand and shape and is very durable Obviously you will need to repaint the aera Mix up the epoxy and hardener the quatnitys are automatically meashured with the dispensing pumps mix in the ballons until the texture is like dough. then apply to the area once dried suggest 24 hours sand back as required Prime and paint Regards Mark |
