minimum fuel pressure
21.08.2011 at 10:09:27

I'm getting close to applying for permit to test on my RV6. The LAA process for measuring fuel flow on the electric fuel pump requires the minimum fuel pressure at the carb inlet. The Lycoming manual for my IO-320-D1A only shows min pressure at the injectors. is this correct? Also, the Precision Airmotive Silver Hwk web pages show a nominal min pressure required between 20-50psi. I'm a bit confused, can anyone help please!

Hi Neil
I have the fuel flow data sheet to hand from my RV-7 (carb)  if you give me your e-mail i will scan it and mail it over to you.
The mininumiun alowable fuel pressure at the a normal carburettor inlet is 0.5lbs or 0.344 bar.
However because yours is injected it will will have a higher pressure at the inlet.
The fuel flow information the laa need is at the inlet not the injectors
Your inspector should have a Lycoming manual which wil give the data.

Regards
Mark

Superior XP-360 Maunual, which is like a Lycming but Sup...  Wink gives:
  • Carb 0.5-8.0psi (3.0 'desired')
  • FI 2 - 35psi
In practice we never measured ours, just did the electric fuel pump flow test.  Disconnect pipe from Mech Pump, fill calibarated bucket and time.  Best do once from each tank.  Ensure (I think) 150%+ of max engine can ask for (which might be 60L/hr?  so want ~90L/hr+).

Read the requirements carefully as some people go to extrodinary (and occasionally dangerous) lengths for something that is simple. As long as your inspector is content most people do the check that Andy described - time how long it takes for a litre to come out and work it out from there. If you have used conventional pumps of proven performance (Andair or Airflow Performance), you are really checking there are no restrictions in the piping.
