Importing a used RV
01.07.2010 at 18:14:42

Hi all,

I've just joined the forum with the goal of becoming an RV owner having fallen in love with the RV7. I have 350+ hours on helicopters and have just started my fixed wing PPL training. So I have a few questions!

I've talked with several FW pilots about my plans for an RV and several have said I shouldn't consider one 'as my first aircraft'. Too small, fast and sensitive. Would you agree with this theory? I flew in one with the owner last week and, bearing in mind at this point I have virtually no FW experience, I did a lot of the flying and found it fun, a challenge but not overwhelming. I loved it!

And my other question, for now........., is related to importing from the US. I'm quite particular in what I am looking for (RV7 (not A), sliding canopy, CS prop, 180+hp, well built) and there seem to be very few RV's in the UK for sale but more in the US. Have many other UK owners imported complete, flying RV's from the US? What are the pitfalls, legalities etc?

Thank you for reading!

Mona

Hi Mona,

First of all, are you familiar with the Permit to Fly regulations which would govern any RV-7 that you might import into the UK? You'd need to get up to speed on this. Lots to learn as not the same as CofA.

Have a look at the LAA website: http://www.lightaircraftassociation.co.uk and in particular here:

Re: Imported aircraft, have a look here:

People do import completed RV's from the US. Was probably more common a while back when you got more dollars for your pound. Remember to budget time and money to bring the plane in line with UK regs.

I have 200+ fixed wing hours on Cessnas and Pipers and am building an RV-7. I know I will have a fair few things to learn (e.g. CS prop, TW, etc) before I will feel competent to fly my -7.

Best of Luck,
Steve Hutt
