North Weald RV 28-30 September
18.09.2012 at 23:29:38

I have been asked to post the following:

"Could you post a bit onto the RV Forum regarding the North Weald RV gathering on 28th to 30th September with a mention of letting the NW squadron know of intended time/date of arrival on 01992 524510 please.
We had some delays in finalising things at NW so need to spread the word as far and wide as we can now things are sorted."

With regard to NW and the transponder mandatory zone. I have see a post on flyer suggesting it is now a Mode S zone and Mode C is no longer permitted - CHECK as I gather something changed (or WAS due to) this month (September'12) . I have not followed up to check yet. I gather you can go in anyway without any transponder by contacting NW.
Just posting to make sure nobody gets into trouble.......

Tim

RV End of Season get together at North Weald. Welcome to arrive Friday, BBQ Saturday afternoon, camping on site (not next to aircraft). Please indicate your intentions to attend either on the rvsqn bulletin board or by email to ian at rvuk . co . uk and I'll pass on to the organisers. The squadrons Cafe will be open Friday evening if there is sufficient pre-declared demand, hence request above.

Could all pilots, intending on going to North Weald at the end of the month please give Alan or Lee at "The Squadron" a call on +44(0)1992 524510 ,this is not for PPR, but just to give them some sort of idea what time you all intend to arrive.

I am reposting this from David, B - Yahoo group - as it fills in details about the stanstead transponder zone I mentioned above.

Vanatics
With 5 days to go to the RV gathering at North Weald a timely reminder may be in order concerning the Stansted Transponder Mandatory Zone. Since NW is underneath Stansted controlled airspace (base 1500 feet) it is within the Eastern extremity of the Stansted TMZ. To those of you equipped with mode S transponders this causes no problem since you can fly in the TMZ without speaking to anyone if you wish (but BELOW and outside of Stansted controlled airspace of course). For the rest of us we need approval to do so. The temporary exemption granted by the CAA to approve aircraft with operational mode A/C transponder and squawking mode C to fly within the TMZ ceased at the end of the Olympic restrictions period. This means that all non mode S equipped aircraft need approval to fly in the TMZ. This should not be a big deal. Non radio aircraft can get approved by phone prior to take off. Radio equipped aircraft can get approval when airborne from Essex Radar/Stansted approach on 120.625 or (more likely in our case) from Farnborough Radar on 132.800 . Note that we need approval to fly in the TMZ, not a clearance.
Thanks to John Brady for his help in clarifying the current situation.

Just to add something to Tim's post...

It is not actually necessary to get approval from F'Boro/Essex to get in/out of NW, even without a Transponder.  You need to follow the "Letter of Agreement" / route via the 'North Weald Area of Operation. The area consists of a circle of 2nms from the airfield and fillet through the Epping VRP.' and speak to 123.52.

This effectively means route either in from the East, or keep south of the TMZ (e.g. along the M25) and then come in within 2NMs of Epping VRP.

Details are in nwa_pilots_self_briefing_pack_sept2012.pdf which you can find by Googling 'North Weald Airfield letter of agreement' or try this http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&sourc e=web&cd=2&cad=rja&ved=0CCgQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.eppingforestdc.gov.uk%2Findex.php%2Fhome%2Ffile-store%2Fcategory%2F9-information-for-pilots%3Fdownload%3D1663%3Apilot-s-briefing-pack-revised-september-2012&ei=nP9eUOD-EOaw0AWM7IGYAw&usg=AFQjCNEH3OHyGuZ7O3xe6AH4z8Zb2rr3mw - I am sure somoen can amke the link more friendly!
