Mazda rotary engines in RV's
13.04.2009 at 21:07:39

Is it possible to get a Rotary engine installation in an RV approved by the LAA for flying in the UK.

And if it is possible how difficult is it to get approval.

Has anyone actually heard of anyone building or flying one in the uk.

Thanks.

Adam,

LAA prefer and direct builders to fit engines approved by the kit designer - in the case of Vans Lycoming or clone.

The LAA (CAA Permit) system is not like the US Experimental. You will find it a very long process if at all possible to use a different engine. Other builders who have fitted a 200hp Lyc in an RV6 (RV6 approved to 180hp) found it a long process and would possibly stick to standard next time.

That said there are a few oil burners about, but they have taken a while to get approved. Other issues like cowls etc will also slow your build up. Sure a few of the non Lyc builders could give you a guide on timescales for going off plan.

Oh, and to answer your question. No have not heard of one in the UK.

Regards,

Tim

Hi Adam
You may want to take a look at this web site; this builder in the USA is planning to fit a Mazda Rotary engine!

http://www.trv7.com/

I actually work for Mazda UK, so I can obtain technical information regarding these engines if you need it.
However if you do want to go down the long and protracted route of fitting a rotary engine; do not use a second hand engine  or an engine that has supposedly been overhauled !
No Mazda dealer in the UK or the rest of Europe would contemplate a major overhaul.... we don't even allow repairs during the warranty period of a new car.
If any problems exist we simply replace the motor.
The good news about using a new rotary engine is the cost; which has been drastically reduced in the past year.
Hope this helps

Regards
Mark
